Historical Yachts

About

An archive of yacht history, built from sources

Historical Yachts documents the history, ownership, provenance, design and restoration of significant yachts — and records how we know what we claim to know.

Alongside the public archive we undertake independent historical research for owners, buyers, brokers, shipyards, family offices and institutions.

Sourced historical research

Entries are built from primary material where it can be reached: yard order books, launch and registry records, survey reports, contemporary press, official wartime service records and photographic collections. Secondary literature is used to locate sources, not to substitute for them.

Provenance

A yacht's identity is tracked through registry and official numbers rather than names. Renaming, reflagging and rebuilding are recorded as events in a continuous chain, with the evidence for each link stated.

Documented fact and unverified claim

Every entry separates what a source supports from what is widely repeated without one. Anecdotes about guests, incidents and ownership are common in yacht history and frequently unsupported; they are labelled as such rather than removed or asserted.

Source transparency

Each published record will carry a source note listing the material consulted, its location where known, and the gaps that remain. Where a claim rests on a single source, that is stated.

Corrections

Corrections are welcome and are recorded openly with the date of the change and the evidence that prompted it. Substantive amendments are noted on the entry itself rather than made silently.

What this project is not

Historical Yachts does not broker, sell, charter or value vessels, and does not publish sales material. It has no commercial relationship with owners, yards or agents whose vessels appear in the archive.

Research method

Documented facts are source referenced
Every fact that appears in an entry or a commissioned file carries the record it came from: the archive, registry, yard book, press item or collection, with its location where known.
Conflicts are shown as conflicts
Where two records disagree on a date, a name or an owner, both readings are published with their origin rather than silently resolved into one tidy version.
Unavailable ownership information is not guessed
Ownership that is not publicly documented is left open. Inference, rumour and repeated attribution are not written up as fact.
Commercial research stays independent
Commissioned research is documentary work. It does not imply brokerage representation of seller or buyer, and it is not a valuation, legal advice or a technical survey.

Current status of this site

This is a design preview. Yacht entries, journal articles, index counts and imagery are sample editorial content prepared to demonstrate structure and tone. Photography is temporary and will be replaced with licensed or public-domain archival material. Nothing on this site should be cited as verified history in its present form.
